Spring 2017 Sailing Class Selection

Spring Programs

Novice Optimist – This class is an introduction to sailing, intended for kids who have limited to no experience in the Optimist dinghy or other small sailboats in general. Sailing and racing skills are practiced through games on and off of the water, and participants who start in the Beginning Opti group can graduate to the Opti Racing I group by mastering certain skill requirements outlined in our Opti Racing Skill Evaluation Sheet. Dates and times listed below.

Intermediate Optimist/Light Green – The Intermediate Optimist/Light Green class is designed to help sailors transition from the Novice sail-cube class to green fleet. It builds upon the fundamental skill-sets developed in the Novice Opti class and introduces sailors to racing. Classes are held in one-person, 8’ Optimist Sail Cubes and or optimists. This class is the most recent addition to our program and has been very popular. It is a good combination of fun cruising and racing. It allows sailors to improve at their own level as they become comfortable and confident with themselves in the sport. Dates and times listed below.

Optimist Green Fleet Racing (Green Fleet) – This class is intended to sharpen racing skills for returning SBYSF skippers, or other skippers with comparable sailing backgrounds. Racing skills are practiced on and off of the water to help participants improve at an accelerated pace. While personal equipment is recommended, especially for participants who are competing on a regional or national level, the SBYSF has charter racing Optis available on a first come, first serve basis. Participants who start in the Opti Racing I group can graduate to the Opti Racing II group by mastering certain skill requirements outlined in our Opti Racing Skill Evaluation Sheet. This class often participates in regattas. Dates and times listed below.

Optimist Champ Fleet Racing (Champ Fleet) – This class is designed to help returning SBYSF skippers, or other skippers with comparable sailing backgrounds prepare for regional, national, and international competition. Racing skills and training discipline are emphasized, and a significant time commitment is required for this program. Participants must own or have access to race-ready equipment, and must demonstrate mastery of a number of skills outlined in our Opti Racing Skill Evaluation Sheet. This class often participates in regattas. Dates and times listed below.

J. V. Race Team – The JV FJ Program is intended as a learn to race course for kids who have limited to no experience in the FJ dinghy or dingy racing in general. Sailing and racing skills are practiced through games on and off of the water, and participants who start in the JV FJ group can graduate to the SBYSF Race Team by mastering certain skill requirements outlined in our Race Team Skill Evaluation Sheet. This class is a good way for new sailors to have fun on the water, and for kids who would like to work towards being prepared for FJ racing with a high school team. This class often participates in regattas. Dates and times listed below.

High School Race Team – The SBYSF Race Team Program is our premiere racing program, for sailors who have graduated from Optimists or other small boats, and find enjoyment in the working towards developing racing skills. Practices focus on developing racing skills that will allow participants to compete on a regional, national, and international level. The commitment expected of participants in this program is comparable to other Varsity level high school sports. Participants can earn credit in Independent PE at school (please inquire with your school’s athletics department). Sailors in other SBYSF programs can qualify for the Race Team by mastering certain skill requirements outlined in our Race Team Skill Evaluation Sheet. This class often participates in regattas. Dates and times listed below.
